Fireplace & Fire Pit Maintenance

Custom Fire Pit

This post will give you tips on how to take care of your new or current fireplace or fire pit.

Masonry Fireplace Maintenance*

Masonry fireplaces are constructed from a concrete base, concrete frame, and cladded with stone. They are ideal for outdoor settings because of their durability. Typically, it is recommended to clean the chimney at least once per year (depending on the frequency of use, of course). It is also important to regularly clear away ash from previous uses, along with any other natural detritus, to discourage habitation by plants and animals.

  1. Keep the undergrowth around your fireplace to a minimum. Undergrowth not only presents a fire hazard, but can also contribute to the deterioration of some materials.
  2. As a general rule, if the creosote (the buildup of ash inside the chimney) is roughly 1/8 inch thick, it is recommended that the chimney be cleared and cleaned. The more creosote present within the chimney, the greater the chance of a chimney fire.
  3. Remove any debris such as leaves, twigs, and partially-burnt wood using a broom or leaf blower.
  4. Use warm, soapy water and a bristled brush to scrub the interior of the fireplace.

Masonry Fire Pit  Maintenance

Fire pits are typically more cost-effective and smaller than fireplaces, making them a more common choice for homeowners. They also make it possible to arrange seating in a full circle. Similarly to fireplaces, it is also important to clean your fire regularly to discourage habitation by plants and animals.

  1. Remove spark screen (if present) and clean with a stiff brush and warm, soapy water.
  2. Remove any large pieces of debris or use a leaf blower to remove leaves and twigs.
  3. Sweep the ashes toward the centre of the fire pit and dispose.
