737 Bannerman Ave/St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church

St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church was a special project for B. Rocke Landscaping, as it holds significant architectural value for both the neighbourhood and the city. The church has distinct Byzantine characteristics that have been interpreted in a more modern style. This is evident in the prominent glazed arches surrounding the central dome, which feature 320 square feet of mosaic. The interior of the sanctuary seats 800 people, while the basement hall and auditorium increase the total capacity to 1,100. With such a large congregation in mind, it was important that our team create a beautiful entrance capable of accommodating the flow of participants. The original inspiration for the design was a plan drawn up by a fellow landscape designer, who was retiring and recommended our firm take over. With a few modifications, we were ready to begin! The spacious, central patio features two raised planters which leave plenty of room for services, weddings, funerals, and community events. In addition to the revitalized patio, this project also features a wheelchair accessible entrance, low maintenance perennials, limestone boulders, and a new sprinkler system. The idea was to establish a space that was both functional and easily maintained. The old, concrete walls were refreshed by cladding them to match the building colour. Overall, this project successfully brought new life to the church while complementing the gorgeous architecture!
