Cedar Alternative

British Columbia, Ontario, and Quebec produce the vast majority of Canada’s lumber and wood products. Most of our softwood is exported to the United States, India, China, and Europe, leaving only 40% for the domestic market.

You may have noticed a recent price increase with regard to many wood/lumber products, especially for cedar. This is largely due to the forest wildfires that occurred in B.C. The fires shut down a number of factories and burned down significant swaths of harvestable material. A shortage in supply, of course, leads to price increases. It is estimated that prices have risen anywhere from 10-20% in varying provinces.

Consequently, building with cedar has become more difficult. A great alternative is treated lumber, which has been treated with chemical preservatives to protect the wood from rot and insects. Though lacking the raw majesty of cedar, there are stains that make treated lumber look absolutely fantastic!

The easiest option is to pick a semi-transparent exterior stain, which is easily sourced from your local hardware store. For a bolder look, a solid stain will add a punch of colour. Just keep in mind that solid stains require more frequent touch-ups.
