Daycare for Play
Client: Victor Play Centre Inc
Project Completed: Oct 2023
Project Goals: This commercial project was initiated by a daycare centre in Winnipeg’s Daniel McIntyre neighbourhood and was completed during the 2023 construction season. The centre was in dire need of renovations to its outdoor space, as the yard was in rough shape and becoming a hazard. The goals set for our designers were: new front stairs and landing, new and safe play area, new front pathway, and a new front gate for extra security. And it had to be able to withstand regular play!

We have completed numerous projects for schools and daycare centers over the years, and one of the main challenges is working around our client’s scheduled daytime operations. Safety is paramount and sometimes we are required to halt work while members of the public access the buildings. Here at B. Rocke Landscaping, we always want to ensure the safety of all people present on the construction site. We kicked things off at Victor with the demolition of the existing dilapidated wooden structures, including the stairs, landing, and planters. Once we had a clean slate, we were able to bring in limestone to pack down a proper base for the rest of the project. New footings were installed for the deck off the front door, and we were able to reuse some of the original pavers to clean up the border of the yard. Most of the play area was covered in durable artificial turf, supplied by our local partner, Soccerland Winnipeg. Within the turf area, a stepping stone path leads from the gate to the stairs, made of 16”x16” pavers from J&D Penner. This turf will hold up for many years of wear and tear and requires virtually no maintenance. The northeast corner of the yard features a small hill for the kids to play on, shaded by a pergola and bordered by a wooden bench. The new front stairs, deck, pergola, bench, and security gate were constructed by our in-house carpenter using treated brown lumber from STAR Building Materials and included built-in storage space underneath the front landing for wagons and yard toys. We also improved rainfall management by running an underground drainpipe from the building downspouts to the front of the property, which will mitigate erosion and keep the play area nice and dry for the kids.
